Is it possible to add a 6th gear in a automatic transmission?

Apparently they don't work like manuals but have some sort of planetary gear set or something. So is it possible to add a 6th gear to a 5 speed automatic? I can add additional info if necessary. How much would this cost? Thanks for all help.
