Is Type O Negative's singer really dead? Or a joke death?

I love all of Type O Negative (TON) joke albums. They satire rock music so well it's unbelievable. Knowing how jovial this amphibious group can be I am suspicious of Peter Steele's alleged death. Aren't there reports he truly lives and they are currently recording the next album (iTunes store hit i think).
